The literal translation for “the spirit of the stairway”, refers to that moment when we think of the perfect response to a comment in an earlier discussion. Sadly, this realization often occurs as we’re descending the stairs or on our way out, when its too late to be of actual use.

In French, Spirit of the Stairway is called L’esprit de l’escalier.
